BBC story to the radio article….. alas my wonderful experiences with sheep and goats in the South Hebron Hills do not make me qualified to be a shepherd in Bethlehem….
The shepherds have been an important part of the birth of Jesus story, but this BBC piece shows how difficult it is to be a shepherd near Bethlehem these days.

If Carlos the 74 year old father or Jamil his young 20 year old son, needs any help keeping the tradition going….part of me would want to go to Bethlehem and help look after the sheep.
I was out several days with the shepherds in the South Hebron Hills, I know it is a hard life, and would be too much for me.
Life in the city…. or being out with the shepherds, a tough choice especially in this rain. Here are a few photo’s whilst we were out with the shepherds and their sheep & goats (thanks Bob).
Alas experience has shown, it is not always as idyllic here as it looks, as can be seen by the press release below…e.g. on the 1st January 2011, a military Jeep followed us and waited at the Ma’on chicken barns for several minutes to make sure the shepherds couldn’t graze the fertile land up there (too late we had already been up there).
Although the shepherds and my team mate Joe ran, I thought why!! We are doing nothing wrong, it was only later that they had so much negative experience it was safer to run.
